How to Unlock Your iPhone with a Mask in 2021

Among the minor inconveniences we’re faced with during this truly devastating pandemic is the inability to unlock your iPhone with Face ID while wearing a mask.

Thankfully Apple added mask detection in iOS 13.5, allowing you to more quickly to go to passcode entry. But still, wouldn’t it be great if you could unlock your iPhone while wearing a face mask without having to type anything at all?

With the newly released iOS 14.5 public beta, you can, provided you also have an Apple Watch.

To start, enter the Apple Beta Software Program. You’ll need to install some profiles on your iPhone, after which you’ll see the new 14.5 beta versions in Settings > General > Software Update.

After installing both iOS 14.5 and watchOS 7.3, you’ll see a new section in Settings > Face ID & Passcode titled “Unlock with Apple Watch.” Turn this on, and voila!

From now on, if you’re wearing your unlocked Apple Watch and your iPhone attempts Face ID while wearing a mask, it’ll revert to unlocking with Apple Watch, bringing back the ease of Face ID even while wearing a mask.

This doesn’t work for everything, most notably Apple Pay, but being able to check your notifications while out and about will bring some small relief to a challenging year.
